What is a sinus infection?

A sinus infection, also known as sinusitis, is a condition in which the sinuses, which are air-filled spaces in the skull, become inflamed and infected. This can lead to symptoms such as headache, facial pain and pressure, congestion, sinus pressure, runny nose, and fever. Sinus infections can be caused by a variety of factors, including allergies, viral infections, bacterial infections, and fungal infections. Treatment typically involves rest, hydration, over-the-counter pain relievers, and decongestants. In some cases, antibiotics may be necessary to treat bacterial infections. Chronic sinusitis may require more aggressive treatment, such as surgery or immunotherapy.
